Objectives

To assess the outputs of past and ongoing research projects and existing knowledge that can have a direct impact on the key challenges that the sector is facing.

Description of work and role of partners

EUROSHELL RTD partners (under the coordination of the existing EAS Thematic Group Euroshell and the WP leader EAS) will build upon recent EU funded projects (notably AQUAINNOVA and MARINE TT) that have produced summaries and analyses of the outputs of EU research in aquaculture. Specific projects (ongoing or recently completed) that have a potential impact on the sector will be identified and classified into the same Thematic Areas, as used by the European Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform (EATIP) for simple integration into that platform.

The EATIP Thematic Areas are:

• Product quality, Consumer Safety & Health
 • Technology & Systems
 • Managing the Biological Lifecycle
 • Sustainable Feed Production
 • Integration with the Environment
 • Knowledge Management
 • Aquatic Animal Health and Welfare

• Socio-economics & Management

 Relevant results from National results (especially for example on large scale oyster mortalities) will also be added to complement the review, and this will include grey literature and empirical knowledge.
 Based on a specific template for the summaries, this will provide a comprehensive review of knowledge that has been generated, and it will emphasize the relevance to the sector and the outputs that can/have been transferred to companies within the sector.
 

Guide lines :
 In connection with the results of the WP3 and for optimal understanding of professionals, this specific model will seek to reflect the 3 centers of interest of the shellfish company: its environment, its product and its market. The level of involvement of professionals to the research program will be also stressed: at design of the program, its execution, and at the step of the dissemination of its results. Finally the results will be put forward according to the 3 levels above mentioned and applied or practical consequences will be highlighted. Perspectives will be finally highlighted (application to short, medium and long term, academic benefits, further programs necessary...). This aspect will be developed in close coordination between leader of WP, AEPM and EAS (Partners 13, 2 and 3).

 Task 3.1 Template for RTD summaries

 Work package leader EAS will build a specific template for the individual project summaries, that describes the knowledge that has been generated and emphasizes the relevance to the sector and the outputs that can/have been transferred to companies within the sector. (EDC members: partners 1, 2, 3, 9, 13)

Task 3.2 EU, regional and national research summaries

 EAS will compile a list of recently completed and ongoing EU projects that are relevant to the shellfish sector and produce summaries of these projects. Each summary will be approved by the project coordinator, so as to ensure quality control. National and regional projects will be identified by the RTD partners of the project (members 2, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14).

They will be complemented by the applied projects implemented or supported by the professionals at the local level (members 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8). This supplementary identification phase will be carried out under the coordination of EMPA (partner 3).

 Task 3.3 Grey literature
 

EUROSHELL partners (specifically RTD partners 2, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14) will source grey literature that is relevant for each Thematic Area. The selection of information to be included will be based on the specific needs of the shellfish sector and the principal knowledge gaps that have been identified in WP2. Using the template developed in task 3.1, they will write a summary of the article/feature, so that the format remains similar to the research project. Given that grey literature has no peer review, the EUROSHELL partners – in cooperation with the Producer Associations from their country – will be responsible for judging the ‘accuracy’ of the article/feature and its relevance to the sector prior to its inclusion as an RTD summary for use in EUROSHELL. Contact with the author of the article/feature may also facilitate this.

Task 3.4. Thematic Area synopses
 

WP leader EAS will then compile a web based synopsis for each Thematic Area. This synopsis will use nontechnical jargon where possible, so that it can be easily understood by producers. As web-based ‘static content’, it can be available in multiple languages online. Initial translations made by tools such as Google Translate, will be reviewed by EUROSHELL partners to ensure linguistic accuracy. Editorial guide line for the above model will be also applied to the synopsis (partners 1, 2, 3, 9, 13).

Task 3.5 Online repository

With the outcomes of the previous tasks, EAS and the coordinator, CNC (partner 1 and 2) will build an online repository of knowledge derived from research (D 3.5) that can be accessed by companies and other stakeholders in the sector. This documentary warehouse will be intended to continue after the end of EUROSHELL to be enriched by regional, national or transnational projects European. This will be one of the useful tools of the extension network that will be developed from the kernel "test" (results of the WP2).
